36 percent of Limestone’s registered voters go to polls

A jubilant Limestone County Coroner Mike West celebrates with his granddaughter, Lexi West, after defeating challenger Donnie Powers in Tuesday’s Democratic Primary Election by tallying 65.2 percent of the vote. Lexi is the daughter of Chris and Katie West.

Slightly more than one-third of Limestone County’s registered voters cast their ballots in Tuesday’s Democratic and Republican primary elections, according to Probate Judge Mike Davis.

Summary report figures show that 13,801—36 percent—of a total 38,579 registered voters. Democrats cast 7,078 ballots, and Republicans, 6,703. Twenty ballots were classified “nonpartisan” because the voters only participated in the Amendment 1 provision on the ballot, Davis said.

Davis met with party chairmen Wednesday morning to certify the vote. Figures are based on 33 out of 34 precincts counted. The fourth box is a provisional, or challenge ballot box, which is not expected to change the final outcome on any of the races.

Candidates must have tallied at least 50 percent of the vote in order not to have to face the second highest vote-getter in the July 18 runoff election.
