A funfest for senior citizens 60-years-old or older doesn’t happen very often, does it?

Well next week it’s happening and it’s all going down right here in Athens.

Funfest 2006, an event sponsored by Limestone Chapel Funeral Home, First American Bank, Limestone Drug Store and Athens-Limestone Foundation for Aging, is set to begin at 10 a.m. May 6 at Swan Creek Park.

Emily Haney, director of Limestone County Council on Aging, believes this is an event that the seniors are looking forward to.

“Ticket sales have really been busy and we figure next week will even be busier,” she said Friday.

The four-hour event includes lunch catered by Valley Foods Services and activities such as Bingo and a cakewalk, which Haney describes as number one. Activities will be under tents, which will provide shade.

Haney said volunteers from different agencies, Athens-Limestone Foundation for Aging and some of the same people involved in Poke Sallet will be helping out during Funfest.

Funfest is an event where seniors can get together and have fun, basically for free, Haney said.

“All that we ask is they make a $1 donation for tickets for the activities for the day.”

“We’re (volunteers and Athens-Limestone Foundation for Aging) just in it to benefit the seniors and for them to have a fun day that day.”

Haney said in the event that it rains on the day of the event the Funfest will go on at the Senior Center on Pryor Street.

Tickets to the event can be picked up at the Athens Senior Center for a $1 donation. It is open to seniors 60-years-old and older and the event is for adults only.

Swan Creek Park is located beside Athens High School. Funfest begins at 10 a.m. and ends at 2 p.m.
