It’s been whipped into shape and housed with the city’s public works offices.

For the first time Athens City’s Public Works Department, Building Department, Planning Department and Street and Sanitation Department are located underneath the same roof.

“We’ve all moved in — just getting situated,” said Earl Glaze, city sanitation director.

As of Monday all offices had moved into a building formerly used as a jail annex and by Athens Utilities. The building, once complete, will have cost approximately $150,000 to renovate. It is located on Elm Street a half-mile west of Hine Street.

Glaze said this has been a four-month renovation project and is expected to be completed this month. He said the roof work was hired out and city employees did some of the electrical work, which has been less expensive.

Public Works, planning and building departments moved to the current location from Athens City Hall and the Street and Sanitation Department moved from Armory Street.

Glaze said the office space is 6,400 square feet but there are also a warehouse and a garage on the property that will be used. He said the current location is a nice location for employees and the public can get to it easily.

“Very glad to be here,” Glaze said.
