The Clements Colts got a pair of two-run home runs from Chris Kelly and Jesse Cobb, but not enough runners on base in front of them and dropped their Class 2A Playoff opener at home, Tuesday, 6-5 to Fyffe.
Fyffe right-hander Dustin Bryant gave up just five hits and struck out 14 Clements hitters, including a combined seven strike outs by the Colts’ Nos. 1 and 2 hitters Titus Wright and Josh Eaton.
“The top of the order didn’t do what I wanted them to do,” Clements head coach Bart Nave said. “My top guys that I want to hit, didn’t.
“When the top of the order strikes out like we did today, you’re not going to win a lot of games.”
The Colts (14-10) led 2-0 following a two-run home run by Kelley in the second inning.
Meanwhile, right-hander Matthew Moore cruised along until the fourth. The right-hander retired nine of the first 10 hitters he faced through the first three innings.
In the fourth, however, he allowed a lead-off single to Kyler Adams. After a sacrifice bunt moved Adams to second, Steven Fleming’s single cut the Clements lead in half.
Things really fell apart in the fifth when Moore issued a walk, and Bryant reached on an error to tie the game with two outs. Adams had an infield hit, and Michael Wooden cleared the bases with a two-run triple put the Red Devils in front 4-2.
“They made us field the ball,” Nave said. “We did fairly well at fielding it, but we didn’t at times.”
Another Clements error led to two more Fyffe runs in the sixth before Ryan Griffin got Adams to fly out to end the inning.
Michael Moss led off the seventh with a single for Clements, but Wright and Eaton struck out in front of Cobb’s home run to left field. Griffin, who led Clements with three hits, followed with a single, but Moore fouled out to end the game.
“We just didn’t get the hits when we needed them,” Nave said. “We let too many good pitches go by and swung at too many bad ones. That’s just baseball I guess.
“Fyffe’s got a good ballteam. We got to build on that and work toward next year.”
The Red Devils (22-5) will be at home Friday and Saturday for a best-of-three second-round playoff series with Gordo. The Green Wave beat Tanner 7-6 on Tuesday.
