Cancer survivor’s quilt will raise money for Relay team

Limestone County resident Brenda Moss is a survivor.
She has battled and won the fight against cancer not once but twice.
In 2000, Moss learned she had breast cancer in her right breast and endured six chemotherapy treatments and a mastectomy. In 2003, Moss learned she had colon cancer and later a mass was discovered in her stomach. She received radiation and more chemotherapy treatments.
After all Moss has gone through, today at age 54, she’s doing fine, although she’ll never be 100-percent the person she was before her illnesses.
One thing Moss doesn’t expect will ever be the same is her quilting habits. She estimated she has made approximately 200 quilts in her lifetime. But, her health not being what it used to, has made quilting a difficult task.
“I’m not able to do it like I used to,” she said.
She said she used to work a job outside of the home as well as quilt and sew but says those days are over.
However, since being diagnosed with the disease, Moss has made some interesting quilts, one that will be raffled off at this year’s American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life in Athens.
Federal Mogul is selling raffle tickets for the quilt, which is pink and white blocks with appliquéd pink ribbons, to be drawn for during Relay for Life. This is a fund-raising effort for the Federal Mogul team. The money will in turn go to the American Cancer Society.
Moss has made two other quilts that are like the one for Federal Mogul. One she gave to her son Daron and the other is for her if she is ever put on bed rest. She has also made three others that are similar but different.
Moss’ husband, Louie, has worked with Federal Mogul for six years and Moss said this is kind of a way to give back to the company.
Moss said the only thing she could think of for the quilt to represent was the hope for a cure for cancer.
A life lesson she said she has learn is to live every second to the best because what the next second holds in unknown.
“Keep your faith,” she said.
Federal Mogul is currently selling $5 tickets for a chance to win the quilt, which will be given away during Relay for Life to be held May 5-6 at the Sportsplex. Tickets will also be sold during the event.
