The outcome of an investigation into the actions of a local teacher accused of showing obscene videos to students will not come for three more weeks.

The Limestone Board of Education released a statement Wednesday saying a school board conference will be held May 16 to report on an investigation into the actions of Steve White, an eighth grade science teacher at West Limestone High School. No time was given for the conference.

The investigation is complete, according to the statement, but Alabama law requires the conference be held “no less than 20 days and no more than 30 days following the notification of the employee.”

After the report, Superintendent Dr. Barry Carroll will make a recommendation to board members as to what action, if any, should be taken. Board members will then take a vote on the recommendation.

Carroll was at a Tuscaloosa hospital Wednesday because his daughter is ill, a school system spokeswoman said, but Carroll released these comments: “We have conducted a thorough investigation into the allegations that were reported. I have notified Mr. White and our board members that we will hold a board conference. Information related to the investigation will be presented during the conference.”

He added: “Although the allegations have lead to much speculation, the board members and I are not allowed to discuss the details of the investigation prior to the board conference in May. At that time details will be presented and the teacher will have an opportunity to respond to the allegations.”

White, who is a Democratic candidate for the State District 4 House of Representatives, was placed on administrative leave April 7 following complaints from parents about e-mailed video clips shown in his eighth grade science class. White was initially reprimanded after he showed a clip from filmstripinternational.com, which is a slide show of images of George Bush accompanied by a song titled “A-hole.” The word is written on the video beneath images of the president and others in his administration.

Parent Christy White complained publicly that, despite repeated calls and e-mails, school principal Stan Davis and Carroll would not reveal whether White was punished for the incident.

Soon after Jackson was quoted on television news and in newspapers, additional complaints surfaced about material White was alleged to have shown in class.

Students in White’s class were questioned by school officials and made written statements. Several students reported seeing video clips featuring a woman holding a bear and a cigarette with her bikini top pulled down and a strategically placed star; The Fruitcake Lady, a character from The Tonight Show with Jay Leno who uses profanities while giving “naughty” advice; a sexually explicit video of an animated version of Bill Clinton; and a video with a teen getting drunk from a keg then vomiting and drinking again.

A spokesman for the Alabama Democratic Party said White resigned from the Limestone County party but he has not removed his name from the ballot.
