Brian Houghton had three hits, including a three-run home run, and retired the final 13 batters he faced Tuesday as the Athens Bible School varsity baseball team wrapped up the Class 1A, Area 15 title with an 11-1 win over Speake.
Houghton gave up one run and three hits in the first inning, but once ending that inning he was never touched again. The right-hander struck out six in the complete-game performance.
The Trojans bounced back from a 1-0 deficit with three runs in the bottom of the first and were never challenged. They scored two runs in the second, one in the third, four in the fourth and one in the fifth.
Houghton’s third hit drove in the final run in the fifth inning with none out.
Jonathan Winland had two hits, including a double. Eric Persell, Jordan Pugh, Ryan Morrring, Troy Steelman and Will Chumbley also had doubles. Cody Nave walked three times and scored two runs.
The win means the Trojans will host an opening-round Class 1A playoff game next Tuesday against either Vina or Marion County. Those teams meet Thursday for the Area 13 crown.
