An Athens man, Jamie Michael Cowart, was charged by Huntsville Police early Saturday with manslaughter and first-degree assault in the traffic death of a New Market woman.
Huntsville Police spokesman Mark Roberts said that Cowart is accused of running his pickup into the back of a motorcycle driven by William Brandon Newberry, 21, of New Market. Newberry’s passenger, Brandi Raeayn Turbeville, 22, was killed in the collision, according to police reports.
A Huntsville Hospital spokeswoman said that Newberry is listed in critical condition.
Cowart, 29, of 14230 Bell Road, was taken into custody after the 12:20 a.m. collision at University Drive and Pulaski Pike. Cowart was released later Saturday on bonds totaling $20,000.
Police reports say that Newberry and Turbeville were stopped in the eastbound lane of University Drive waiting for the traffic light to change when Cowart ran into the back of them.
