Rogers, Taylor, Young, Irwin named Athletes of Month

Due to some unforeseen circumstances AL-H SportsMedicine had to postpone the naming of February’s Student Athletes of the Month. We would like to take this opportunity to recognize those students as well as the winners for March.

For February we congratulate Amanda Rogers, Athens High School and Landon Taylor, Ardmore High School.

Rogers, an honor student who will graduate with an advanced diploma next month, is one of the core reasons the Athens softball team is ranked fourth in the state with a 34-9 overall record. In addition to being one of the best in her class and leading Athens toward a run at State, Rogers is very active in her community and exemplifies what this award is all about. Rogers plans to continue her education and her softball career at Wallace State-Hanceville next year on an athletic scholarship.

Taylor also is showing his skills on the diamond, the baseball diamond that is.

Taylor plays second base for the Ardmore Tiger baseball team and occasionally you can find him on the mound.

Coach Lee Walker praised Taylor for his defensive play as well as his leadership, dedication, work ethic, and his ability to be a role model to the younger players.

While Ardmore’s record is not what Taylor had hoped for during his senior year, the Tigers are still in the running for a spot in the postseason. Taylor is also an honor student in the classroom and plans to continue his education as well as his baseball career at either UAH or Calhoun.

For the Month of March we would like to recognize Brian Young, Athens High School and Kana Irwin, Athens Bible School.

Young was a key player in the fall during Athens’ run through the football playoffs that ended in a quarterfinal loss to eventual state runner-up Buckhorn by a field goal. This spring you can find him on the baseball diamond.

Young is a versatile baseball player who can play anywhere on the field at any given time. He has been a tremendous leader for the Athens Golden Eagles on the field and at the plate.

Just like one of his fellow students who won this award in February, Young is an honor student who will also graduate next month with an advanced diploma and has received numerous scholarships to attend college.

While Young has yet to make a final decision on where he will continue his education next year he has narrowed the field to four choices: The University of Alabama, Troy University, Rhodes, or Sewanee. He also expressed interest in continuing his football career this coming fall.

Irwin is one of the tops in her class and was recently recognized as the Class 1A, Region 8 Bryant Jordan Achievement Athlete, which carries with it a scholarship to use toward her college education.

Irwin has received a scholarship to attend Faulkner University where she will continue her softball career. She is one of the leaders of a young group at ABS, which is ranked fourth in the state with a 27-7 overall record.

With talent surrounding her, Irwin has been a force on the mound as ABS looks to make another run at the 1A State Championship this season. Irwin is the fourth student from ABS to receive the Student Athlete of the Month award from AL-H Sportsmedicine, which leads all schools in Limestone County.
