Lady Trojans regain hold

SPEAKE – The Athens Bible School Lady Trojans took back control of the Class 1A, 15 race Thursday with a 7-6 win on the road at Speake.

The win avenged a 1-0 loss to the Lady Bobcats in Athens last week.

Kirsten McClure led the Lady Trojans with two hits and drove in a run. Abbie Melvin added a triple, while Ashlee Eaton, Katie Eubanks, Kerri Pender and Mindy Staggs had singles.

Eaton drove in a run.

Kana Irwin got the win on the mound, allowing four hits and two walks, while striking out five over seven innings. The Lady Trojans built a 7-3 lead through five 1/2 innings, then had to withstand a rally by the home team in its final two at-bats.

Athens 10, West Morgan 2

TRINITY – Lacy Kerr had three hits and tossed a three-hitter over five innings to lead Athens to a road win at West Morgan.

The Lady Eagles also got three hits from Courtney White and Whitney Hawkins. Amanda Rogers added two hits, including a triple. Tiffanee Eaton had a double, and Bobbie Whitt, Kristina Prater and Rachel Black had a single each.

Kerr struck out six and walked one over five innings. Eaton struck out one over the final two innings.

East Limestone 2, Hazel Green 1

Morgan Franks delivered a two-run double in the fourth inning to lift the Class 4A Lady Indians to a tight win over the Class 6A Lady Trojans.

Back to back singles by Shannon Bowling and Laura Tittsworth set up Franks’ game-winner. Tittsworth had another single in the game, and Bee Medley had East’s only other hit.

Medley picked up the win, allowing seven hits and one run over seven innings. She struck out 11.



Girls’ golf

Athens 4th at Sunset Landing

MADISON – Jill Higginbotham shot an 87 to help the Athens High girls’ golf team to a fourth-place finish in the Huntsville Orthopedic Bob Jones Invitational golf tournament at Sunset Landing Golf Club.

Allison Murphy (95), Lib Smith (105) and Claire Dawes (105) were the other competitors for Athens.

Decatur won the event behind the medalist play of Suzanne Stanley, who shot 72. Bob Jones was second.



Girls’ soccer

Athens 6, Florence 5

FLORENCE – Brooke Daron scored four goals, and Hannah McAndrew provided the game-winning goal in Athens’ 6-5 win on the road at Florence.

Adalene Woodruff gave Athens a quick 1-0 lead in the first half, but the Lady Falcons quickly tied the score. Daron added two more Lady Eagles’ goals before halftime to stake Athens to a 3-2 lead.

Darron added two more goals in the second half, and McAndrews scored the team’s sixth.



Baseball

Clements 24, Hazlewood 1

TOWN CREEK – Clint Manry tossed a two-hitter on the mound and collected three hits and drove in five runs at the plate to lead the Colts to the one-sided victory.

Titus Wright added three hits, including a double. Chris Kelly, Ryan Griffin, Blake Moore, Michael Moss and Ken Hammett had two hits each.

Manry struck out eight over five for the victory.

Elkmont 14-15, Ardmore 7-2

Bobby Barton had five hits and drove in five runs to help lead Elkmont past Ardmore in both ends of a high school doubleheader.

In the opener, Barton had three hits including a double, and drove in two runs. Joseph Dowd added two hits and drove in four runs.

Chance Newby had two hits, including a home run.

Justin Marshall (3-0) got the win, allowing three runs on five hits in five innings. He walked three and struck out four.

In the second game, Barton was one of six players with two hits for Elkmont.

Ryan Woods drove in four runs with a pair of hits, including g a double.

John Schrimsher allowed just three hits and one walk over five innings for the win. He struck out two.



Girls’ tennis

Athens Bible 8, St. Bernard 1

Anna Bryant and Emily Schrimsher came away with close wins at No. 2 and No. 5 singles early last week to lead the Athens Bible School girls’ tennis team to a win over Saint Bernard Prep of Cullman.

Bryant defeated Sarah Robinson 8-6, while Schrimsher defeated Scarlett Chandler by the same score.

Katie Klein beat Katie Simon 8-2 at No. 1 singles, then teamed with Bryant to beat Katie Robinson and Sarah Robinson 8-3 at No. 1 doubles.

Makayla Melvin got the Lady Trojans’ other singles win with a 8-0 win at No. 4. April Petty dropped a tough 9-7 decision to Marie Robinson at No. 3.

Cara Bryant and Brittany Crafts teamed to beat White and Chandler 8-1 at No. 2 doubles.



Boys’ soccer

Athens 4, Muscle Shoals 0

Samuel Romero had a goal and two assists to help Athens High stay unbeating in Class 5A, Section Section 8.

With 31:17 left in the opening half, Alfredo Martinez got the Golden Eagles started on a pass from fellow midfielder Ethan Gossett. Gossett then placed Romero’s pass into the Trojan goal 18 minutes later for a 2-0 lead.

Just 40 second later, Romero cross a pass in the air, and Jarrod Gordon headed it home for 3-0 halftime lead.

Athens added its last goal of the match seven minutes into the second half when Romero ricocheted a shot off the goal post from 35-yards out.
