Candidate qualifying continued despite courthouse closing

Limestone County Probate Judge Mike Davis rode out a political storm, so to speak, when the chief election official remained in the courthouse to accept candidate qualifying forms even after the facility was closed for inclement weather.
County Commission Chairman David Seibert ordered the courthouse closed at noon, but Davis posted a sign on the door that candidates could enter and come to his second-floor office until 5 p.m., when qualifying officially closed.
In both the sheriff’s race and the County Commission chairman’s race there is no opposition.
“This is the first time that I know of since 1982 that both the sheriff and County Commission chairman has run unopposed,” said Davis. He said he did not know if that had occurred prior to 1982, when Davis was elected for the first time.
