East golfers look for more

Goal one is in hand for the East Limestone boys’ golf team.
More, they hope, are to come.
Thursday, the Indians set a school record with a team score of 152 strokes in a tri-match win over Clements and Decatur Heritage at The Canebrake Golf Club.
The Colts was next in the four-player, nine-hole scoring with 167 strokes, followed by the Eagles with 179.
But this is just the start for East, which is aiming at a trip to Mobile in May 15-16 for the AHSAA Class 4A-6A State Tournament.
“Our goal is to get to Mobile,” East Limestone head coach Donnie Story said. “ I’ve been telling them that all year.
“We’ve gotten drilled the last two years at sectionals. This year we’re hoping we can go compete and have a chance to win it – at least qualify.”
The Indians’ hopes for an improved showing begins with senior Brandon Holt, who has been competing on the varsity for three years. He also has veteran teammates in sophomores Clay Ebersold, Justin Gullatt and Alex Goodwin, along with freshman Taylor Garrett.
“I’ve been the No. 1 guy since my sophomore year,” said Holt. “We’ve been playing well all year, and experience is the reason.
“Taylor has been playing since he was in the 7th grade, so this is his third year. This is Justin’s third year, Clay’s third year and Alex’s second.”
The Indians previous low team round was a score of 155. Story said he got that number from former East Limestone golf coach Mike Young.
“They started talking about it last week, that they wanted to make sure they had the school record,” Story said. “I think Mike told me a few weeks ago that 155 was the best, so that was kind of a starter goal for us.”
Actually the goal to make the state tournament this season was started a long time ago.
“When I took over the program three years ago, all of them were young,” Story said. “Brandon was a 10th-grader, the rest of them were 7th graders and eighth graders.
“We said that by the time Brandon was a senior we wanted to go to state.”
Holt is the team’s senior leader and tied for second place on Thursday with Clements’ Levi Gordon at 1-over 37.
Garrett took medalist honors with an even-par 36. Gullatt was at 3-over 39, followed by Goodwin at 4-over 40, and Ebersold at 7-over 43.
Aaron Romine added a 41 for Clements, while Jason Ridinger shot 42. Jeremy Craig was at 47, and Zach Adams shot 52.
