Ardmore prepares for annual Renaissance Faire this month

Medieval sword fights, archery demonstrations and dancing are just a few of the things visitors will experience at the Fourth Annual Ardmore Renaissance Faire.
The faire will be April 22-23 at Ardmore Town Park. Admission to the event is $2 or $1 if in costume.
“Come experience a living history weekend,” said event co-chair Chryl Maddox.
As many as 1,500 people attended last year’s event, which raises money for Ardmore Ala./Tenn. Chamber of Commerce. Maddox said more are expected this year because of additional entertainment and publicity.
Maddox explained the lure of the Renaissance era. “This is the beginning of the modern age,” she said.
Although everyone does not come in costume, Maddox said many people who do. The Renaissance Faire offers entertainment for all ages.
Menagerie Music will perform medieval music all weekend, including singing and playing of the hammered dulcimer, guitar, flute and penny whistle. They also dance a jig and encourage audience participation.
The Society for Creative Anachronism will demonstrate fighting with swords and rapier, and teach English country dance and May pole dancing. Byron Boyd will play several instruments and the Boyd Chapel Puppeteers will also be performing.
Visitors can test their luck in the gaming glen, including archery and chess with the “chess guru.” A free children’s area with a castle jump and period arts and crafts area where children can make a coat of arms or a fairy wand to take home. Faire-goers can also enjoy storytelling and a caricature artist.
Merchants will be on hand to sell wares and there will also be a variety of food vendors. Such foods as ribs, chicken and turkey legs will be available at the event.
Maddox said vendors can register for the event through April 19.
Vendor spaces cost $60 or $20 for members of the Chamber or SCA.
