AHS boys’ soccer remains undefeated

Jarrod Gordon scored a goal and assisted on two others Tuesday, to help the Athens High soccer team stay unbeaten in Class 5A, Section 8 with a 3-2 win at home over Brewer.
The win improved the Golden Eagles, ranked seventh in the state in Class 5A to 9-5 overall and 4-0 in section.
Trailing 1-0 14 minutes into the match, Gordon fed Javier Serrato for a tying goal. Moments later, the same combination teamed to put the Golden Eagles ahead 2-1.
Gordon’s goal with 14:23 left in the half gave Athens a 3-1 lead. Jeremy Brown assisted on that goal.
In second half action three Athens players were injured – Ethan Gossett, Jeremy Brown, and Logan Rich. With 17:50 remaining in the match the Patriots scored a goal, making the score 3-2. A strong defensive effort by the entire Athens team preserved the victory.
For the match Athens took 20 shots on goal, while allowing 11. Each team took 2 corners.
Matt Bailey went the distance in goals for AHS. Defenders Alfredo Martinez, Davis Simmons, Matt Jackson, and Bryan Dean played well against pressure from the Patriot forwards. Midfielders Eric Miller, Samuel Romero, Tommy Caillouet, Daniel Norwood provided outstanding effort throughout the match.
The Golden Eagles play host to Muscle Shoals on Thursday.
JV Match
Athens 2, Brewer 0
David Solomon and Chad Stinnett each scored goals, while Brandon Solomon and Taylor Pate combined on a shutout in goal for the Golden Eagles.
Athens controlled the match throughout taking 11 shots on goal, while allowing only one. AHS took the only 4 corners awarded during the match.
Defenders Scott Clem, Chris Bacon, Zach Brown, and McCartney led the defensive effort (7-2-3 overall). Midfielders Bryan Brown, Nathanael Hilliard, Ross Evans, Houston Glaze, and Pate controlled the action. Forwards Tyler Vaughn, Drew Bowman, Alex Hambright, David Solomon, Brandon Solomon, and Stinnett maintained offensive pressure on the Patriots throughout the match.
Varsity Girls
Brewer 3, Athens 2
The Lady Patriots outscored the Lady Eagles 2-1 in a shootout to record the one-goal victory.
Brooke Daron answered an early Brewer goal to tie the game late in the second half, and scored again in the shootout. Athens, however, was unable to make another of its penalty kicks, while the Lady Patriots made two.
For Athens, Kelsey McDonough had a great defensive game; and Hannah McAndrew played strong at midfield.
Baseball
ABS 13, Decatur Heritage 8
DECATUR – Brian Houghton had three hits, including a pair of doubles, and scored three runs to lead Athens Bible School to a 13-8 win on the road at Decatur Heritage.
With the win, the Trojans (2-0 in Class 1A, Area 15) are within one area win of clinching a trip to the Class 1A Playoffs.
Logan McWhirter and Jordan Pugh added two hits each. A.J. Price had a double and drove in two runs.
Isaac Eaton got the win , allowing eight hits, striking out six and walking two in seven innings.
Westminster 13, Tanner 3
HUNTSVILLE – Cliff Bunch and Blake Montgomery each had doubles, but it couldn’t offset an offensive onslaught by the Wildcats.
Jarrod Harrison took the lose, striking out seven in five innings.
Hartselle 19-9, Athens 4-1
Chris Stewart had three hits, but Athens dropped both ends of a Class 5A, Area 16 doubleheader to Hartselle.
Stewart and Brian Young each had two hits, including doubles in the first game.
Brad Reasonover had a pair of hits in the second game.
Boys’ golf
Clements 159, Tanner 182
Aaron Romine shot a nine-hole score of 35, and Levi Gordon was right behind at 36, leading Clements to a 159-182 high school golf victory over Tanner at Athens Country Club.
Dennis Freeman led Tanner with 41.
Softball
Tanner 16, Hatton 7
Hollye Keenum hit a pair of home runs, and the Lady Rattlers used a nine-run second inning to blow by Hatton 16-7 Tuesday in Class 2A, Area 15.
Haley Keenum gave up six hits in the win for Tanner, which has wrapped up the area title.
Haley Keenum had a triple and a single for the Lady Rattlers.
Christen Stephens and Sarah Smith each had doubles, while Beth Anne Flippo, Haley Keenum and Whitney Stephens drove in runs.
