A $300,000 project to resurface portions of two roads in the Cross Key area in and around the Rogers Group Rock Quarry was completed Tuesday.
“It looks real good,” said Limestone District 4 Commissioner Bill Daws. “All the pot holes and ripples are fixed and that should last us another five years.”
Rogers Group repaved the roads at Easter Ferry and Cross Key roads and provided a portion of the funds needed to resurface the roads that some believe were damaged as the result of the heavy quarry trucks coming and going from the Easter Ferry Road quarry.
Daws said the funding comes from a statewide service tax that is collected. In addition, he said Rogers Group pays an additional five cents per ton fee it hauls from the quarry to Limestone County to help repair the roads.
“They put in an acceleration lane for the quarry trucks to use when they come out of the quarry,” Daws said. “We think that will help some.”
The ruts, ripples and potholes on the two roads were so severe earlier this year that a fully loaded log truck broke in half when it hit ripples on Cross Key Road.
Daws said the conditions at that time posed a big danger, especially to those who violated the speed and weight limits set by the county.
Limestone County Sheriff Mike Blakely directed his deputies two weeks ago to start issuing citiations to those who violate the speed and weight laws.
