An Athens volunteer coach who last year was arrested for sexual misconduct has been found not guilty of all charges following a trial last week in Athens Municipal Court.
Municipal Court Judge Don Mansell acquitted Stoney Burks Thursday after hearing testimony involving the accusation that Burks coerced a 16-year-old girl to have sex with him.
“I wanted my name cleared and I knew I was innocent because it was all lies,” Burks said Monday. “I’m glad my name has been cleared.”
The teenager obtained a warrant against Burks in November and he was arrested.
Burks volunteered as an Amateur Athletic Union girls’ basketball coach in Athens before his arrest. He said he has not coached since and is not sure at this time if he will ever coach again.
Burks is a preacher at St. Paul’s Spiritual Church in Decatur and is continuing to preach there.
His attorney, John Taylor of Huntsville, filed for an acquittal following the teen’s testimony Thursday in court before Mansell.
Taylor told reporters that he proved with phone records and work records that the 16-year-old called Burks at the time she claimed the sexual act took place.
The attorney said the girl also worked a complete shift on her job and did not seek medical attention.
Burks said he doesn’t know why the teen accused him. He said he was not her coach, but has known her for a number of years.
