The Limestone Commission has been notified by the State of Alabama that a grant of approximately $233,000 has been approved for the construction of a new Owens senior center off Alabama 99.
Commissioners will vote Monday to purchase five acres from Geneva Jackson for $50,000, on which the senior center will be built, which is located on the west side of Alabama 99 near Myers Road.
Limestone County District 4 Commissioner Bill Daws said total cost of the project would be $283,000. He said the county is purchasing the land with the remainder of the money for the project coming from a grant from the Community Development Block Grant program.
The senior center will be a 30-by-100-foot structure comprised of 3,000-square-feet of floor space. It will replace the old Pleasant Point Senior Center that was condemned more than a year ago. About 50 members are expected to use the center once it opens later this year.
Limestone Revenue Enhancement Director Rodney Jackson said bids are expected to be advertised and opened sometime in early April.
