Poke Sallet Follies set for weekend

It was an era when John Travolta danced the night away in Saturday Night Fever and bellbottoms and platform shoes were anything but scarce.
And beginning Thursday night some will get a chance to see some of Limestone County’s local celebrities relive the moment in this year’s Poke Sallet Follies whose theme is Disco Fever: Disco Nights.
“They’re your mayors, your city councilmen, and your county commissioners and all these high profile people––that really you can see them in a different element,” said Jackie Greenhaw, director of Poke Sallet Follies.
“Each night we’ll have like Thursday Night Fever, Friday Night Fever, Saturday Night Fever. It’ll be a variety show like it usually is,” Greenhaw said. “It’ll be some real interesting acts, without giving them away, I’ll say that some of them are highly entertaining.”
He said the sold out show, which begins Thursday and lasts through Saturday, includes some dance routines, some serious numbers and a lot of comedy. Each night the meal will be served at 7 and the two-hour show will kick off around 8.
As for what to expect, Greenhaw didn’t give too much away but did say the concluding act will be “quite breathtaking.”
“This is the group that usually ends it every year and if you’ve been before you’ll know who I’m talking about,” he said.
Greenhaw has been directing this event for the past two years and said that he thinks that this is the 14th year for Poke Sallet.
The money raised from the $35 per person fund-raiser goes to benefit Limestone County’s Council on Aging. Greenhaw said that programs such as Meals-on-Wheels are primarily funded by Poke Sallet.
Each night approximately 200 people will attend the event. And a lot of planning and preparation go into making it a success.
Greenhaw said he starts working on the project during the summer and puts ideas together with various other people in the community. Greenhaw said that work has been done two or three night a week since Christmas in preparation for Poke Sallet.
For those of you who have never been, it’s sounds like you are missing a lot of fun.
“We’re all losers,” Greenhaw laughs as he explains that no one actually wins for their entertainment. “No really we’re all winners being able to do this for the community.”
Greenhaw is ready to get the event started. “As long as we have planned we are definitely ready to get it underway.”
The show is also dedicated to a special person each year but Greenhaw wasn’t ready for everyone to know who this year’s special person is just yet.
