Athens police were notified Tuesday that the mother who vanished with her 8-year-old daughter last week has been located and is in custody in Duluth, Minn.
“Police in Duluth notified us today (Tuesday) they have her in custody and the child was with her and is fine,” said Athens Police Capt. Marty Bruce. “She is being held there on our charge of interference with custody and we are working on getting her back here.”
Janine Tanner Peterson, 39, of 1501 Pinedale St., Athens, picked up her 8-year-old daughter on Friday, Feb. 25, and when she failed to return the child the following Sunday, the father, who has custody of the child, reported her missing to police.
Bruce said police obtained an arrest warrant charging Peterson with interference with custody, a felony. He said information about the missing child and her mother was sent out to law enforcement officers nationwide.
“The father has custody of the child and the mother has visitation rights,” said Bruce. “She has in the past picked the child up and returned her to the county jail.” Bruce said the jail was the site agreed upon by the court for the mother to pick up and return the child for visitation.
The child will be reunited with her father, police said.
