Lady Eagles open area play with win over Trojans

Kristina Prater hit a pair of home runs, including a grand slam, Monday to lead the Athens Lady Eagles to a 9-4 win over Muscle Shoals in their Class 5A, Area 16 opener.
Amanda Rogers and Jordan Sweeney also hit home runs for Athens.. Whitney Hawkins added a pair of singles, while striking out nine in 6 2/3 innings of work on the mound.
On Saturday, the Lady Eagles claimed the championship of the Silver Bracket at the Hazel Green Invitational.
Lacy Kerr struck out nine, Saturday night, as Athens beat defending Class 5A State Champion Hueytown 4-1 in the final game of the Silver Bracket at the Hazel Green Invitational.
Coming out of the loser’s bracket, the Lady Eagles were supposed to play Hueytown again around midnight, but due to mutual consent, the two coaches called the bracket a draw.
East Limestone finished fourth in that pool.
Athens head coach Thad Prater, however, said, “I count it as we won it.”
Prater had a single, Hawkins a double, Rogers a double and Kerr a single in a four-run third inning for Athens.
Earlier, the Lady Eagles beat Bob Jones 7-0, East Limestone 7-4 and Priceville 10-1 after being put into the losers’ bracket by Bob Jones 7-4.
Athens 7, Bob Jones 0
Hawkins struck out seven and gave up one hit in the shutout win.
Prater had a triple and a single, while Hawkins and Courtney White had two singles each.
Athens 7, East Limestone 4
Brianna Holt hit a home run to back to six-hit pitching of Hawkins.
Prater had a double.
Mallory Scott and Chelsea Turner had two hits each for East. Bee Medley added a triple.
Athens 10, Priceville 1
Kerr pitched a non-hitter, striking out three and walking two over four innings. Tiffinee Eaton gave up one run in the final inning.
Bob Jones 7, Athens 4
Kerr had a double and a single in a losing effort.
East 3, Madison County 1
Bee Medley gave up two hits and stroked two hits in leading the Lady Indians to their opening win.
Medley walked one and struck out five, while allowing an unearned run.
Medley had a double among her two hits, while Shannon Bowling had a single and drove in two runs.
Buckhorn 9, East 6
Morgan Franks had two hits, including a triple, and drove in two runs to lead the Lady Indians’ effort against the Lady Bucks.
Chelsea Turner had a single and drove in two runs for East.
Medley worked the first four innings, allowing seven hits, four earned runs and four unearned runs. Franks gave up a walk and unearned run.
Bob Jones 3, East 0
Medley gave up seven hits and a walk in a losing cause against Bob Jones.
Laura Tittsworth had the Lady Indians’ only hit.
East 3, Albertville 2
Turner had a triple and a RBI to help lead the Lady Indians over Albertville.
Tittsworth drove in two runs for East.
Medley struck out six and allowed just two hits in pitching the win.
