Youth was served in high school basketball last week as a freshman and a sophomore helped lead their teams to area titles.

At Elkmont, freshman guard Bailee Robinson jumped into the action and led the Lady Red Devils to wins over West Morgan and New Hope in the Class 3A, Area 15 Tournament.

At Athens, meanwhile sophomore Larquis Crutcher led the Golden Eagles to the Class 5A, Area 16 Tournament Championship with wins over Hartselle and Muscle Shoals.

As a result, the two have been named as the The News-Courier/Encore Sports Medicine High School “Players of the Week” for Feb. 15.

Robinson had 22 points in the Lady Devils’ 58-29 rout of West Morgan in the tournament semifinals, then came back with 19 points in a narrow 58-57 win over New Hope in the championship game.

Crutcher led the Golden Eagles in both of their games as well. He had 20 points in a 56-42 win over Hartselle, then scored 16 in a 59-40 win over Muscle Shoals.

The Players of the Week awards are given each week to highlight outstanding athletic performances from a player in one of Limestone County’s eight high schools.

Representatives of Encore who work with various schools in the county have presented t-shirts this season to the winners.

Any winners who attend Clements or West Limestone High Schools can go by the Encore office and pick up t-shirts as well.
