Lady Trojans edge out Colts

Athens Bible School has had its ups and downs this basketball season. That’s why it was important for the Trojans to end the regular season on a good note with a win.

ABS did just that by edging out Clements 48-45 on senior night.

“This was a good win for us,” ABS coach Terry Eubanks said. “These girls have been through a lot this season and it was good for them to get a win on senior night.”

Jordan Beggs pulled Clements with in two when she scored on a lay up to make the score 34-32 midway through the fourth period.

After the Colts forced a Trojans’ turnover Whitney Mooney tied things up by making two free throws. With the help of another turnover, Beggs put Clements ahead 36-34.

Rebecca Adams tied the score back up at 36 when she was able to drive the lane and score.

“We didn’t play our best tonight,” Clements coach Sonya Marks said. “Athens Bible did a good job on defense.”

Beggs regained the lead for Clements when she scored on an unassisted lay up late in the game.

Kristen McClure tied the score up at 38 when she took an inbound pass the length of the court for a score. After getting a stop on the defensive end, McClure took advantage of the deep ball again to take the lead.

“Our girls showed a lot of heart tonight,” Eubanks said. “We caught them not playing back a couple of times on our inbound plays and we took advantage of it.”

With the Trojans leading by four points with less than a minute left the Colts were forced to foul to regain possession. After Clements let over thirty seconds run off the clock, Demonica Mitchell had a controversial technical foul called when she went to intentionally foul McClure. McClure made both free throws to put ABS up by six.

“I didn’t get a good look at the foul,” Marks said. “I think she may have went in a little too hard.”

McClure led the Trojans with 14 points.

Lynne Trimble had 14 points for Clements. Beggs added 10 and Mooney had nine for the Colts.

Clements used several long scoring runs and good defense to route Athens Bible 70-43.

The Colts jumped out to a 19-9 lead in the first period.

Gerard Robinson led the Colts in the second period by scoring 10 consecutive points. Clements held ABS scoreless until the 4:45 mark when Eric Persell made a free throw.

The Colts used a 19-6 run in the second quarter to build a 38-15 lead at the half. The Trojans had only one field goal in the second period.

“We played really good defense tonight,” Clements coach Brian Gafford said. “We are going to try to use this win to build momentum going into the area tournament.”

After Cody Arnold made a three pointer for Clements, Lavar Askins scored to put Clements up 57-27 at the end of the third period.

“Our guys came out ready to play,” Gafford said.

Cody Nave led all scorers with 28 points for the Trojans.

Robinson and Askins each scored 15 points for the Colts. Sean Bachelor added eight for Clements.

“We are going to need a good effort like this when we play Hatton in the area tournament,” Gafford said. “We are going to work on moving the ball around on offense and being more selective with our shots.”
