Mayor Ronnie Marks collected $284 to lead the Athens Relay team during Celebrity Waiters Night at Applebee’s on Tuesday to benefit the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.
The annual event raised $1,735.25 in tips and $120 in T-shirt sales.
Charles Page, Councilman Jimmy Gill, City Attorney Shane Black, Circuit Court Clerk Brad Curnutt, Frank Travis, Probate Judge Charles Woodroof, Sheriff Mike Blakely and Police Chief Floyd Johnson also participated as celebrity waiters.

Smith signs with NW Florida
Athens senior Alliyah Smith signed a basketball scholarship with Northwest Florida College at a ceremony Tuesday morning at Athens High School. Smith, a six-foot, two-inch center, played in the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star game along with the AHSAA North-South All-Star game.
