Local residents celebrated Veterans Day with a patriotic downtown parade Saturday, and programs will continue this week in Athens, Ardmore and at Calhoun Community College.
Also, the Alabama Veterans Museum and Archives staff reminds residents to purchase a flag to honor or memorialize a veteran. The flags will be flown along U.S. 31 on patriotic holidays including Memorial Day, Armed Forces Day, Flag Day, Fourth of July, POW-MIA Day and Veterans Day. A plaque with names of those honored will be on display in the museum on Pryor Street.
To participate, call Teresa Smith at (256) 771-5697 or Museum Director Sandy Thompson at 771-7578.
Tuesday
Calhoun’s celebration to honor United States veterans will be Tuesday with programs at the college’s Limestone County and Decatur campuses.
Retired Maj. Cleo C. Hogan Jr. will speak at 10 a.m. in the grand foyer of the Huntsville campus, and again at 2 p.m. in the Chasteen Student Center on the Limestone campus.
As a member of the 101st Airborne Division, Hogan earned two Silver Stars for Valor, the Bronze Star for Valor, and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry for Valor. An Army Ranger, he was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge and numerous other decorations and awards.
In addition to Hogan’s presentations, the programs will feature New Century High School’s and Austin High School’s Junior ROTC, the Calhoun Chorale, and a special recognition of Calhoun’s own veteran employees.
Refreshments will be served.
For more information, contact Andrienne Dabney at (256) 306-2775.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars will host a Veterans Day program at 10 a.m. at the post on Alabama 127. Attorney General Troy King will be the guest speaker and free chicken stew will be served.
At 12:30 p.m., the Ardmore Veterans Organization will honor veterans and relatives with an annual program and free chicken stew at the Ardmore, Tenn., Annex building on Main Street behind Peoples State Bank of Commerce. Music begins at 12:30, program at 1 p.m., and a flag ceremony with the Cub Scouts begins at 3 p.m.
For more information, call Marcia at (256) 423-3222.
In addition to programs honoring veterans, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will waive day-use fees for veterans, active and reserve component service members and their families at the more than 2,400 Corps-operated recreation areas nationwide on Veterans Day, including sites in Alabama.
"We began this initiative in 2006 to support and honor the men and women who have served the nation and the armed forces,” said Steve Stockton, director of Civil Works for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. "We encourage our veterans, active and reserve component personnel and their families to visit one of our many recreation areas and enjoy their favorite outdoor activities.”
The day-use fee waiver requires only verbal confirmation of service. This waiver covers boat launch ramp and swim beach fees. The waiver does not apply to camping and camping-related services or fees for specialized facilities, such as picnic shelters. Other agencies that manage recreation areas on Corps lands are encouraged, but not required to offer the Veterans Day waiver of fees in the areas that they manage.
To determine which recreation areas are included, visit corpslakes.usace.army.mil/visitors/visitors.cfm.
