Huntsville Fire Department’s jaws of life helped cut the ribbon Friday to open Fire Station No. 18 at 6535 Greenbrier Road, the city’s first public safety facility in Limestone County.
“This is just one part of our ongoing effort to ensure that all our residents enjoy the peace of mind brought by fast, reliable public safety services,” said Mayor Tommy Battle. “We are grateful to our firefighters for bravely serving our community and helping to protect Huntsville residents. This station will enable them to carry out these important duties over a larger area of our city.”
The station was completed ahead of schedule and on budget, with $1.44 million of the project’s $1.91 million spent. The 6,543-square-foot building includes two apparatus bays, two captain’s quarters, seven private bedrooms, four private bathrooms, a common bathroom, a kitchen, a dayroom, a dining area, a turnout gear storage room, a laundry room, and an exercise room.
“It will help us have quicker response times to all types of emergency calls we normally respond to,” said Fire & Rescue Chief Michael Sublett. “We look forward to working in conjunction with all the other first responders in Limestone County to provide the most professional emergency services that we possibly can.”
Sublett says Fire Stations No. 16 on Jeff Road and No. 11 on Martin Road also serve newly annexed portions of Limestone County.
There is one engine company assigned to Fire Station No. 18. This includes one captain, driver engineer, and two firefighters assigned to each of the three shifts at the station for a total of 12 firefighters assigned to the station. The new station will serve Limestone County areas in Huntsville along with Fire Station No. 11 on Martin Road.
