UPDATE: Pot bust nets 132 pounds, 1 arrest

The cooperation of local and area law-enforcement officers and the nose of the Limestone County drug dog has led to the arrest of an Atlanta man and the seizure of 132 pounds of marijuana he was allegedly moving by truck.

Agapito Peter Gomez, 37, was arrested on charges of drug trafficking and obstructing justice by giving a false name Monday night.

Acting on information obtained from Madison County Narcotics Unit, Gomez’s pickup truck was pulled over on Swancott Road in a Huntsville-annexed portion of southern Limestone County about 11 p.m. by the Madison drug unit, Limestone County Narcotics Unit and an Athens Police Department narcotics officer.

The Limestone Sheriff’s Department drug dog, Kilo, sniffed out the pot, which was stored in boxes in the truck. Inside the boxes were 11 12-pound bundles of mid-grade marijuana with a street value of about $125,000.

Blakely characterized the bust as “significant,” though he said deputies have made larger and smaller finds in the past.

Gomez initially used his brother’s identification and was charged for it.

Gomez, who had just been released in February from federal prison on previous drug charges and deported, will remain in the Limestone County Jail until he is returned to federal custody.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement has placed a hold on him.
