Athens Rotary Club met Friday to help end hunger in the city’s youth.
The club partnered with charity group Full Tummy Project to organize 500 individual bags of nonperishable food items that will be given to students at elementary schools across Athens early next year.
Items collected are light enough to secretly drop in a backpack, but big enough to keep a child fed over the weekend days they aren’t at school.
Jennifer Morrison and Kristy Chavers of Full Tummy and Nikki Caldwell of Friendship Methodist Church’s Backpack Blessings will go into city elementary schools next month and talk to teachers and staff to see which students have the greatest need.
The women will go on a Thursday and by Friday Athens Rotary drops off the food. While the child is away at P.E. or another class, the teacher will slip the food into their backpack.
“It’s very discrete,” said Jason Thomas of Athens Rotary.
The club bought all the food, Thomas said, through fundraisers and annual dues.
Currently, Full Tummy is assisting 125 students in the city school system. Over the summer, Family Resource Center took food to the children on behalf of Full Tummy.
