Athens Mayor Ronnie Marks and city councilmen Chris Seibert, Harold Wales, Wayne Harper and Jimmy Gill broke ground Monday afternoon on the site of the new $2.2 million city hall at the corner of Hobbs and Marion streets.
Councilman Joseph Cannon was unable to leave work for the photo.
City officials estimate the 15,793-square-foot building will be completed by December 2015, with city employees handling a majority of the construction work.
Work is scheduled to begin Dec. 10.
