The Department of Logistics, Acquisition, and Enterprise Systems Management at Athens State University has made a concerted effort to expose students to real-world scenarios.
To that end, a group of students from the College of Business along with university professors recently toured the Target Distribution Center in Greenbrier on Tuesday.
“There is a Chinese proverb that one picture is worth ten thousand words and this is why we want students involved up front and early with business” said Dr. Thomas Pieplow, Department Chair in the College of Business. “Far too often, hiring officials tell us that students graduate with a firm understanding of academic theories but have little if any exposure on executing these theories in a real-world setting. So introducing our students to cutting-edge businesses will certainly make them more marketable when looking for employment and more functionally competent when they are on the job.”
Approximately 50 students attended the tour. The majority of the students were from classes that focused on the logistics and managerial concentrations in the College of Business at Athens State.
Pieplow acknowledged that businesses and faculty are vital in making this happen.
“The north Alabama region is indeed a national treasure and home to a plethora of one-in-a-kind business niches,” he said. “We find that companies like Target, SAIC, SESI, CSC, and others welcome these opportunities to be a part of the student’s educational experience and when we visit, they are great hosts.”
