Annual Duck and Run set for Sept. 15

— Keep Athens-Limestone Beautiful will host the ninth annual Duck and Run 5K and Fun Run on Sept. 15 in Athens.

The Duck and Run is a mildly challenging, certified 5K that will take runners and walkers through the historic neighborhoods of downtown Athens and around the Courthouse Square. The race will begin at 8 a.m. and the 1-mile fun run begins at 9.

Registration for this race is $20, while registration for the 1-mile fun run is $10. Runners can register online at www.KeepAthensLimestoneBeautiful.com or at www.active.com.  Registrations will also be accepted at the KALB office located at 125 East Street in Athens, directly across from Big Spring Memorial Park and next to the Gulf Gas Station Museum.

“Registration numbers are great again this year,” said Lynne Hart, executive coordinator of KALB. “We are looking for another very successful event thanks in large part to our sponsors.”  McClary Ford, Fleet Feet, Pepsi, Z-TV, and Limestone Bay Trading Company are major race sponsors again this year. Additional sponsors include Limestone Drug, Dub’s Burger, Eddy J. Burks, CPA, Wilmer & Lee, PA, Athens-Limestone Hospital, Brueggers, Quiznos and Advocare.

Packet pickup and late registration will be from 3 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 14 at the KALB office. Race day registration will begin at 6:45 a.m.

A 5K awards ceremony will be held shortly after the fun run. Awards will be presented to the first place overall male and female and first place masters (over 40) male and female, and to the first three finishers in both male and female age groups.  A mid-pack cash award will be presented and a cash drawing will be held amongst those present at the awards ceremony.

Proceeds from this event will benefit the work of Keep Athens-Limestone Beautiful, a local affiliate of Keep America Beautiful whose mission is to empower citizens of Athens and Limestone County to take greater responsibility for enhancing their community environment.

This mission is reached through programs such as Adopt-A-Spot, providing Clean and Green opportunities at outdoor community events, taking environmental education into city and county schools, the annual Earth Day Celebration and much more.

More information, including a course description, can be found at www.KeepAthensLimestoneBeautiful.com. Those interested can also contact Eric Patterson at duckandrun5K@yahoo.com or call 256-233-8728.
