— The 19th annual Trail of Tears Motorcycle Ride passed through Athens at high noon Saturday on U.S. 72 near Champion Chevrolet.

An estimated 150,000 riders were expected to take part in the event that stretches from southern Tennessee to northern Alabama and follows the footsteps of Native Americans affected by the Indian Removal Act of 1830.

According to organizers the economic benefit of the ride to the state has been more than $85 million over 18 years.
