3 youths escape from juvenile center

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Officials say a worker lost a thumb in a melee that resulted in the escape of three juveniles from a state youth detention center near Montgomery.

A spokesman for the Department of Youth Services, Allen Peaton, says the incident occurred at the Mount Meigs youth facility.

Montgomery County Sheriff D.T. Marshall says the juveniles attacked staff members at the facility Saturday night.

One of the workers was beaten, losing a thumb and some teeth in the attack.

Using keys taking from a staff member, juveniles crashed a vehicle through a gate to make their escape.

Officials say the three are from Huntsville, Franklin County and Tuscaloosa. Two have been spotted, but none of the three is back in custody.
