WASHINGTON (AP) — An Alabama businessman and regular Republican contributor wants a federal court to strike down limits on how much an individual can give to political campaigns.
Shaun McCutcheon of Hoover says it’s unconstitutional to bar a donor from giving more than $46,200 directly to all candidates over a two-year election cycle.
The Montgomery Advertiser reports that McCutcheon’s suit doesn’t challenge the $2,500 limit on what a contributor can give a single candidate. But he says he should be able to steer that smaller amount to as many Republicans as he pleases.
McCutcheon’s case is one of several unresolved challenges to the web of contribution limits and rules that govern federal campaigns. McCutcheon and plaintiffs like him want the Supreme Court to widen the reach of their 2010 Citizens United decision.
