MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — The Alabama Education Association won another round in a legislative battle over a code of ethics for public school teachers statewide.
The State Board of Education approved a code of ethics for teachers last year, but the Legislature’s regulatory body, the Legislative Council, blocked its enforcement at the urging of AEA. The council’s action is subject to review by the entire Legislature.
The Senate voted 18-10 Tuesday to support the council in blocking the ethics code. The issue now goes to the House, where Rules Committee Chairman Ken Guin said he hopes to take it up Thursday.
Democratic state Sen. Roger Bedford of Russellville called the school board’s code vague and unenforceable.
AEA officials say they support having a code, but they want one that is clear.
