MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — A state senator is pushing the federal government to clarify its position on tribal land in the state — a decision that could affect the status of three casinos run by the Poarch Band of Creek Indians, Alabama's only federally-recognized tribe.
The Montgomery Advertiser reports (http://on.mgmadv.com/JpgNG9 ) Republican Sen. Bryan Taylor of Prattville is urging the U.S. Department of the Interior on behalf of the Escambia County Commission to declare whether a 2009 U.S. Supreme Court decision means the land on which the tribes operates its Atmore casino should not be in the federal trust.
An official with the Poarch Band of Creek Indians said since its federal trust status allows them to operate the casinos, the county's effort could lead to the casinos closing and a huge loss of jobs.
