U.S. 72 shooting suspect to appear in court

— A preliminary hearing will be held today for the Tennessee man who confessed to shooting a random motorcyclist last week on U.S. 72 in Athens.

Noah Andrew McGlawn, 20, of Whitesville, Tenn., is scheduled to appear at 1:30 p.m. in Limestone County District Court before Judge Jerry Batts, records show. A preliminary hearing is held to determine if there is probable cause for the case to be heard by a grand jury.

McGlawn was charged Sept. 10 with attempted murder and shooting into an occupied vehicle after he allegedly shot Brandon Matlock, 23, of Athens, as Matlock passed McGlawn’s green sport-utility vehicle on 72.

McGlawn fled the scene after the shooting but later telephoned 911 to report that he shot a motorcyclist on 72, Athens Police Chief Floyd Johnson said. McGlawn told investigators he shot Matlock because he was angry with his father for wanting him to go to trade school and he “just felt like shooting someone,” Johnson said.

Matlock told investigators he was traveling on the inside westbound lane when he looked over and saw the SUV driver pointing a gun at him, the chief said.

McGlawn fired two rounds from his .22-caliber pistol at Matlock, striking him in the right shoulder and in the right, lower back, Johnson said. Matlock managed to park his motorcycle in the median and walk across the eastbound lanes of 72 to a golf driving range, where he called 911, the chief said.

Matlock was flown to Huntsville Hospital, where he underwent surgery. He has since been released and is recovering.

Johnson described the shooting as “totally bizarre” and said he had never seen anything like it in his nearly 30 years with the department.
