FLORENCE, Ala. (AP) — A north Alabama police chief is on leave from his job after being charged with driving under the influence.

Officials say Tuscumbia Police Chief Tony Logan was arrested Saturday afternoon at his home in Florence. City attorney Tom Heflin said Logan asked to be placed on administrative leave on Sunday.

Police say the arrest came after a caller reported that a vehicle damaged a mailbox and caused other minor damage. A police report says Logan was drunk at the time of his arrest.

An attorney for the police chief, Tim Case, said he hopes people will understand what happened once the case is over. Case said he is looking forward to a favorable disposition of the charge.

Logan has been police chief in Tuscumbia since July 2008.
