Ala. Guard unit going to Afghanistan

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — An Alabama Army National Guard unit is preparing to begin a mission in Afghanistan.

About 270 soldiers with the Birmingham-based 135th Expeditionary Sustainment Command will have a send-off ceremony on Saturday.

The unit’s job will be to oversee the movement of parts, supplies, food, mail and troops throughout Afghanistan.

The 135th will do a few more weeks of training at Fort Hood, Texas, and is scheduled to arrive in Afghanistan in early December.

Since the Sept. 11 attacks, about 75 per cent of the Afghanistan-bound 135th members have had at least one tour in and around Iraq or Afghanistan.
