Burglar gets prison in NYC cop-shoots-cop case

NEW YORK (AP) — A man will spend 1 1/2 years in prison for breaking into the car of an off-duty New York City police officer who was then killed in a friendly fire shooting.

Miguel Goitia was sentenced Wednesday in Manhattan. He pleaded guilty to criminal mischief in September.

Officer Omar Edwards was killed May 28. Officer Andrew Dunton spotted Edwards chasing the thief with his gun drawn. Dunton apparently mistook the 25-year-old officer for an armed suspect.

The shooting raised questions about racial profiling. Edwards was black and Dunton is white.

A grand jury voted not to indict Dunton.
