A man accused of attempted murder in the stabbing of a friend at an Athens home was sentenced Thursday to serve five years in state prison and three years on supervised probation, an official said.
Limestone County District Attorney Brian Jones told The News Courier Friday that Brandon Kane Glass, 32, of 14600 Elk River Mills Road, pleaded guilty to the charge Thursday in Limestone County Circuit Court and received a 20-year sentence. However, the sentence was split so Glass would serve 5 full years in prison —with no credit for good time — and three years on supervised probation, Jones said.
At the time of the May 16 stabbing, which occurred at 808 Malone St., Athens Police Capt. Floyd Johnson said Glass and the victim, whom he declined to name, “had been friends for a while and they had both been drinking most of the afternoon and evening. We were told they were in a disagreement over alcohol, and that may have started the incident.”
Glass, who fled the scene and was stopped by Athens Police, was initially charged with driving under the influence, attempting to elude and first-degree assault. Jones said that after he took office he presented the case to a second grand jury, which indicted Glass on the attempted murder charge. Jones said he sought to upgrade because Glass “pulled a knife and gutted the victim.”
The victim, who was initially listed in critical but stable condition at Huntsville Hospital after the stabbing, later recovered.
