Alabama gets prepared for disasters

— MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Alabama is observing National Preparedness Month with a series of activities starting on the first day of the month.

Gov. Bob Riley says the events begin Wednesday with Be Ready Day in Birmingham’s Linn Park. Emergency workers, volunteers and faith-based organizations will teach children and adults how to be prepared for a disaster.

Later in the month, Be Ready Camp for sixth graders will be conducted at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville. The programs wrap up with Ready Sunday on Sept. 26. Houses of worship are being asked to insert information about disaster preparedness in their bulletins and on their websites.

Riley says the programs will stress that every family should listen to warnings, having a communications plan, and have an emergency supply kit put together.
