Ala. worker killed by falling debris

CULLMAN, Ala. (AP) — A 54-year-old construction worker was killed when a piece of building material fell on him at a work site on Highway 278 at Kugler Creek in Cullman County.

The worker, James Lugar, of Columbiana, was reportedly working on the foundation for the creek’s bridge.

The Cullman Times reports that coroner Gary Murphree said Lugar was in a deep hole when a piece of building material or metal fell on him.

Construction started a few months ago around the bridge to expand and straighten the road, which has been the site of several wrecks and deaths in recent years.
