3 people crushed to death on train car in Alabama

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) — Authorities say three people were crushed to death by steel beams inside a train car. A fourth person was taken to a hospital with injuries.

Mobile Fire Rescue employee Steve Huffman says the three people were killed when a load in a rail car shifted shortly before 6 a.m. Tuesday at the CSX rail yard in Mobile.

Huffman tells WKRG-TV that authorities believe the people were transients who were sleeping in the railcar at the time. He said they were crushed when the load of beams shifted. The injured person was taken to University of South Alabama Medical Center.

WALA-TV reports that crews were moving the railcar when the accident happened. No CSX employees were hurt.

Mobile police and Port Authority police are investigating the deaths.
