Second Alabama officer sentenced for I-65 thefts

— MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — A second one-time police officer is going to federal prison for stealing from motorists on Interstate 65 in south Alabama.

A federal judge in Montgomery sentenced former Fort Deposit police officer Carlos Tyson Bennett to more than three years in prison.

Prosecutors say another former Fort Deposit police officer, Jessie Alan Fuller, previously was sentenced to prison for the same scheme.

The 37-year-old Bennett and Fuller admitted to taking cash from motorists during traffic stops on I-65 in 2009.

Both men pleaded guilty last year to conspiracy and civil rights violations. They admitted taking hundreds of dollars from motorists.

Bennett admitted that the two tried to cover up their crimes once an investigation began.
