S. Alabama deputy fatally shot, 2nd wounded in exchange

— FAIRHOPE, Ala. (AP) — An Alabama deputy sheriff was fatally shot and another deputy was critically wounded Friday during a confrontation with a man they were checking on, who was also killed, authorities said.

The Baldwin County Sheriff's Office said in a news release early Saturday that Deputy Scott Ward was fatally wounded after responding with another deputy at about 4 p.m. to a call of concern about the welfare of a man in the Fairhope area, which is about 20 miles southeast of Mobile.

"Upon arrival, deputies encountered Michael Jansen, of Fairhope, Alabama," the news release said. "Subsequently, the deputies were engaged in an officer involved shooting."

Shots were exchanged outside Jansen's mobile home. Ward was transported to USA Medical Center in Mobile, where he was pronounced dead. The second deputy, whose name has not been released, remained in critical condition at the same hospital early Saturday.

Jansen, who was believed to be in his 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigator Eric Winberg told The Associated Press that authorities were sorting out what happened and not immediately releasing details about what led to the shootings, who fired the first shot or what kind of weapon the subject used.
