Old Hobson City, Ala. bingo hall burns
HOBSON CITY, Ala. (AP) — An old bingo hall that once was a center of activity in a Calhoun County community has been destroyed by fire.
The I-20 Bingo hall in Hobson City burned Tuesday night. Oxford fire chief Gary Sparks says his department responded to the blaze but by the time firefighters arrived, half of the roof had collapsed.
The Anniston Star says Sparks called the fire suspicious, but noted there was no insurance on the building. He said the building has been the target of several break-ins recently.
The bingo hall was run by Cleve Holloway until he died in 1997. A new owner took over in 2007, but Mayor Alberta McCrory says it had been closed for about a year.
