MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — The state treasury has more than $382 million in assets waiting to be claimed.
State Treasurer Kay Ivey says unclaimed assets that have been turned over to the state include uncashed checks, stocks, bonds, dividend checks, utility deposits and items found in abandoned safe deposit boxes. The most valuable item is worth more than $511,000.
People can search for unclaimed items on two websites: http://www.moneyquestalabama.com and http://www.treasury.alabama.gov
Ivey says the state has paid out more than $117 million in claims in the last five years. But more items keeping arriving. The state treasury has received more than $47 million in unclaimed assets since October 2009.
