MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — A new study finds that Alabama ranks 10th in the nation for deaths caused by injury, which costs the state millions in medical bills.
"The Facts Hurt" report by the Trust for America's Health and the Robert Woods Johnson Foundation shows Alabama has adult-related injury deaths at a rate of about 77 per 100,000 people. The national average is about 58 people per 100,000 suffering fatal injuries.
The Montgomery Advertiser reports (http://on.mgmadv.com/Lix248 ) that the lifetime medical costs of fatal injury in Alabama are about $29 million.
The report states that injuries — including those caused by accidents and violence — are the third-leading cause of death nationally. It states they are the leading cause of death for Americans between the ages of 1 and 44.
