— MOBILE, Ala. (AP) — A popular restaurant and nightspot in Mobile is closing, leaving about 27 employees out of work.
The Press-Register reports (http://bit.ly/QUIDt6) that the staff at Hopjacks Taproom and Pizza Kitchen learned Saturday the restaurant would close at the end of their shifts.
A notice on the door from the company's Florida-based owner said the company had discovered "major financial mismanagement issues," which led to the closing.
Hopjacks owner Joe Abston said he discovered financial irregularities on May 21. The next month, an employee was arrested in Escambia County, Fla., and charged with second-degree larceny.
Abston said taxes had not been paid properly, and the total tax debt owed in Alabama was around $57,000. He said an agreement with Hopjacks' Alabama debtors couldn't be reached in time to save the Mobile business.
