A $28,000 grant awarded by Gov. Robert Bentley to the Limestone County Commission will be used to repair and upgrade a 10.8-mile trail.
The Richard Martin Trail that extends from Piney Chapel to Veto will use funding from the federal Recreational Trails program to repair erosion problems and make other improvements. The trail follows an abandoned railroad line and passes by the site of the Battle of Sulphur Creek, Alabama's bloodiest Civil War conflict.
“This trail in Limestone County, like many of Alabama’s excellent trails, allows residents to experience nature, get some exercise and learn about local history,” Bentley said. “I am very pleased to support these improvements.”
Eroded portions of the trail will be reinforced with crushed stone, and concrete pipes will be installed to help prevent further erosion. The grant will permit five interpretive signs to be added to the trail, and also will provide funds to repaint the historical Veto Church.
The trail is used for non-motorized activities such as walking, jogging, biking and horseback riding. According to county officials, the Veto Church was built in the 1800s. Now a public facility owned by the county, the church is used for community events such as weddings and family reunions.
The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grant from funds made available to the state by the Federal Highway Administration’s Recreational Trails Program. ADECA administers a wide range of programs that support law enforcement, economic development, workforce development, energy conservation, water resources development and more.
